Absolutely love their western food anytime after 5pm but best after sunset so you can sit outside. Prices are very reasonable and generous servings. Chicken chop is their best seller and personal favourite and that heavenly mash potatoes...Hainanese style Parking is always a hassle in Taman OUG but it's worth it
Tried the mushroom chicken chop from Thomas Western and was pleasantly surprised. It’s reasonably priced with a generous portion — they use a butterflied chicken thigh, which was tender and juicy. The sides of boiled cabbage, carrots, and potato balls paired well with the creamy gravy, which was flavourful without being overly rich. Overall, it felt like a comforting, home-cooked meal. I came across a 1-star review mentioning a drop in quality due to an Indonesian cook. As this is my first visit, I can’t speak on how it was before, but from my experience, the food was great. Definitely worth a revisit if I'm ever craving a hearty plate of western food. One tip - if you're dining in, consider sitting outdoors as it can get hot and stuffy inside.
Happened onto this corner kopitiam that compared with most of the other ones around this area, is clean and less hectic feeling. There's a variety of stalls here: Western (towards the back of the shop), fried rice, claypot chicken rice & soup, "ju-chau" and (surprisingly) indian food. Yet to try many of the stalls, but must say am pleasantly surprised with the quality of the indian food especially mutton curry. It is worth coming for. Roti chanai are freshly made to order.
April 2025 Claypot chicken rice @ RM11 - after so many years they finally raised the price for the claypot chicken rice + RM1. All is good and tastes nice as always. Their boiled soup (RM8) is nice and worth a shot! There are a few stalls that is worth checking out at Restoran Ong Lay. Today we came solely for the claypot chicken rice. 1) Claypot chicken rice @ RM10 - flavorful & chicken well marinated, tender and succulent. A small piece of aromatic salted fish c/w the piping hot pot of rice. They serve only one size of claypot chicken rice which is only good for 1 person. We ordered 4 pots for 4 pax. 2) Stewed soup (炖汤) @ RM7 - today's is lotus root, chicken feet, peanut and pork soup. Very nice and there are a few thickly cut pork belly in it. Dip it into soy sauce to savor! 3) Stir fry sweet potato leaves from (家乡大炒) @ RM10 - full of wok-hei. Meal was satisfying. service from claypot chicken rice is evidently fast and courteous. Sells out fast, b4 830pm if not wrong. Apart from claypot chicken rice, there is also this (家乡大炒) hometown dai chow stall next to the claypot chicken rice which is pretty good too. Pricing is reasonable. A western food & Indian stall is available in the evenings. A vegetarian Lei Cha is available in the mornings which is very nice too. The only gripe at Ong Lay is the service from the beverage counter which is non-existent as there is only 1 Indon lady mending the station and delivering beverages. We have to do the refill ourselves! ;(
Update 2023/10: Curry noodles stall has moved out. The roti canai stall is popular. Started during the tail end of MCO. Texture is good, not chewy, but the dhal could be improved. The Wantan noodles here are pretty good. Generous portion of charsiu and wantan. I like the curry noodles here. The soup has the right consistency. Not too salty, doesn't leave you thirsty after. The coffee shop is bright and not too crowded.
